This past week, my husband and I had the joy (and let’s be honest — the workout) of watching our two grandkids: a 15-month-old who’s just starting to walk and an energetic 5½-year-old.
And really—being grandparent strong is no joke!
Between lifting the baby, taking the big kid to different activities, and managing meals, diapers, and story time, I was reminded how important it is to stay strong and healthy — not just for me, but so I can be there for them.
Because being in shape isn’t just about fitting into a smaller size.
It’s about:
Having the energy to play on the floor (and get back up with grace)
The strength to carry a growing toddler
And the stamina to keep going—even after story time, snack time, making meals, and a stroll around the block!
Here is one the projects I have been doing with my 5 ½ year – we are growing microgreens and plan to eat them in a few days!
Here are 3 simple strategies that can keep you feeling ready for anything:
1. Strength Training = Staying Independent
Lifting something — whether it’s hand weights, grocery bags, or even your grandchild (carefully!) — is key to protecting your joints, boosting your metabolism, and preserving your muscle mass.
And here’s the biggie: After age 50, we lose 1–2% of our muscle every year unless we intentionally work to maintain it. That’s why I recommend at least two strength sessions a week — even 15–20 minutes makes a difference.
2. Practice Getting Up and Down from the Floor
Playtime happens at toddler level, right?
Practicing this movement keeps your core strong, your knees mobile, and your confidence high.
Try it once or twice a day — it’s like a mini functional workout.
3. Walk Like It Matters (Because It Does!)
A simple 10-minute walk (or more) — indoors, outdoors, around the house — can re-energize you, clear your mind, and keep your joints limber.
Walking is one of the best things you can do for your heart, bones, and brain — and it keeps you agile enough to handle an impromptu hide-and-seek.
Staying strong today means more memories, more hugs, and more fun tomorrow!
