Vicky Countess

Today is Father’s Day, and I want to share something I don’t often talk about.

When I speak about falls and fractures, I usually mention my mom and my mother-in-law — both experienced broken hips, and their stories are part of why I do this work.

But today I want to tell you about my dad.

For the last three years of his life, my dad lived in an assisted living facility near me.

I got to be close to him during that time, which I’m grateful for.

Then one day, he fell and broke a rib.

He passed away the next day.

The broken rib caused him significant pain with every breath.

That pain led to shallow breathing, which spiraled into serious lung complications he couldn’t recover from.

It was traumatic — sudden, and devastating in a way I still carry with me.

We don’t talk about men and osteoporosis nearly enough.

Did you know that 1 in 4 men over the age of 50 will suffer an osteoporosis-related fracture — and that men who fracture a hip are actually more likely to die from it than women?

Osteoporosis is called a women’s disease, but it took my father.

His story is one of the reasons I am so deeply committed to this work.

I don’t want any family to experience what mine did.

And while my focus is on working with women, the urgency behind everything I do comes from knowing firsthand how quickly a single fall can change — or end — a life.

If you’ve been putting off a bone density scan, a conversation with your doctor, or taking the first step toward protecting your bone health, let this be your nudge.
