weight-bearing

Last week, we talked about walking — and I shared this line:

“Walking is weight-bearing, which helps maintain bone, supports balance, and reduces fall risk.”

That statement is true.

But today I want to take it one step deeper — because this is where a lot of confusion happens.

👉 Weight-bearing and bone-building are not the same thing.

Here’s what that means in real life.

Walking is considered weight-bearing because:

  • You’re upright
  • Your feet leave the ground and return to the ground
  • Your skeleton is supporting your body weight

That’s helpful. And it absolutely has value.

But for an activity to actually stimulate bone-building cells (called osteoblasts), bones need a stronger signal.

That signal comes from something called ground reaction force (GRF) — basically, how much force travels through your bones when you land or load them.

Here’s the key distinction:

• Walking = about 1× your body weight

• Bone-building stimulus = closer to 3× your body weight

In other words, walking gives your bones a maintenance signal — but not usually a build stronger signal.

This helps explain why so many women do “everything right” — walk daily, stay active, hit their step goals — and are still surprised by their bone density results.

It’s not that walking is wrong.

It’s just not enough by itself to tell bones, “We need to get stronger.”

The good news?

You don’t need extreme workouts or scary movements to send that stronger signal — you just need the right kind of loading, layered in safely.

Stay tuned for next week’s email: “What Counts as Bone-Building (And What Doesn’t)

For now, here’s the takeaway:

  • Walking is a fantastic foundation.
  • Bone-building requires a bit more intention.
